the police are looking for evidence that may be connected to a shooting at a funeral today in the heart of the u street corridor. good evening. i'm jim bents. >> the shooting in the lunchtime hour left cars riddleed with bullets. the video was a stark contrast

to the funeral that was planned today. jack bensen has details. >> reporter: police think it's gang related, police under tremendous pressure to find those responsible working into the night. detectives investigating. u street shooting served a search warrant at a home in the 1200 block of gerd street northwest. they removed evidence in paper bags and what believe to be shotgun casis. theyook a van, a description of a vehicle described near the shooting. the driver's status is not known. earlier around 12:30, chaos enveloped u street northwest, one of the biggest commercial areas in the city. as mourners were leaving walker memorial baptist chump for the funeral of 21-year-old ashley

mccray in t shooting death that happened last weekend, a car opened fire. the suv took off down the street, sideswipedtwocars, and it flipped. one was immediately killed, two other by gunfire. officials claim coats and the other victims had not been inside the church for the service. >> two separate incident and i wantt to be known. >> two cars had bullet holes in the windshield. others were sideswipd. the u streetorridor was closed for hours, leaving residents to believe it might be tarnished at least temporarily by its old reputation of violence.

there were five police officers in their cruisers providing security at the funeral, but the shooting happened a couple blocks away. doreen and jim back to you. >> jackie bensen reporting. ank you, jackie. the sad thing is this is not the first shooting following a funeral. nine people were shot in the capitol southeasafter attending a funeral earlier that day. the man in the drive-by originally planned to attack the actual feral but later settled on the stoop where mouers had gathered. and last november a 19-year-old was shot and killed after coming out of hiding to attend a funeral. george rawlins was ambushed after a fun roeral at a bus ston eighth street. a dog was thrown in the garbage and left for dead over the weekend, and now that dog has a second chance thanks to an unlikely rescuer. john shiffin has our report.

>> the dog is half the size he is supposed to be. his spirit cannot mask the remaining hurt that's visible after his fur was shorn away. the washington humane society says thomas is lucky ju to be alive right now. he was found near a dumpster sometime monday morning. it wasn't his barking that was heard. a maintenance worker taking care of the crash noticed a suspicious-looking cage. it's not clear how long he was stligt in a crate covered by blanket, but officer gardner can't believe a human being would do this to an anal. >> the crate was filthy. it probably had a week's worth of feces and water, juurine, ju

filthy. >> this should teach owners that there are other options for pets. >> we're open seven days a week, 24 hours, so it's not an excuse to throw your dog out with the trash. >> thomas is enjoying steady meals and the company of others. he's not ready to be adopted yet, but inwo weeks, once he gets is weight up and is cleared by the doctors, the humane society hopes to find thomas a good home. outside tonight, there are some clouds but no rain at the moment. that could change for all of us, though, tomorrow. doug has details in the storm certain. how does it look, doug? >> it's actually a beautiful night, and if you're out this evening, and even if you wake up tomorrow morning, you'll notice big changes out there. you can see the moon rising over the nation's capitol, reflecting off lake potomac.

the current temperature and winds low. we've seen a pretty nice night and all the rain gone from the area, now off to the east. except down in north carolina, and that's where we'll start to see the rain make its way this way. still a tropical depression 16, but its moisture will move our way as well. tropical rains are inhe forecast. some areas could eily see two to four inches. i'll show you what gets what and when in my later forecast. former president jimmy carter will spend this night in a hospital after falling ill in a flight today. he suffered stomch pains after flying from atlata to cleveland to promote his new book. doctors suggested he stay in the hospital overnight. carter's grandson says the forr president is doing fine. he expects to resume his book tour with two scheduled stops here in washington tomorrow. family and clleagues said a final goodbye to ted stevens

today. he was buried at arlington national cemetary this morning. he was a world war ii veteran before he went on to be the longest serving republican in the u.s. senate. steven and others were killed in a plane crash last month. a bipartisan bill proposed in the senate today would hold arlington national cemetary accountable to congress as it fixes errors in burial records. a congressional hearing last month revealed more than 6600 graves may be unmarkedr mislabeled. the proposed bill requires the army to correct past errors, to change the way contracts are done, and to reach t to family members of those buried in arlington. it also calls for an evaluation to determine whether the veterans affairs department should run the cemetary. still ahe on news4 at 11:00, new details about a terror spot that has western europe on alert. a tricky time trying to reach a man who fell down a well full of sewage.

a tricky and unlikely rescue happened today. a worker fell down a well into sewage. that well leads to a sewage treatment plant. >> they were able to get the water level under control and bring it down to about ankle deep. >> got down to about 32 inches. there was about two feet of water in t hole. luckily there wasn't any toxic gases down in the hole to where

it would overcome him before we got to him. >> the equipment operator was decontaminad as a precaution and then flown to a nearby hospital. he is expected to be okay. a massive fire that destroyed a barn and lled several cars will not prent the livestock exchange from kubting business as usual this weekend. a fire broke out last night in the area where the cows are kept. officials say more than 200 of them were inside at the time. crews were able to free most of them, butive of them were killed. investigators are still trying to figure out how that fire started. arlington county will break from the rest of the commonwealth and withdraw from the secure communities program. the county board voted unanimously today to pull out of that program. the federal secure communities program alows local jurisdictions to share information about criminal and immigration history of people in their custody. board member walter tahada said there are concerns that the program will lead to distrust

between law enforcement and the immigrant community in arlington county. virginia implemented the program early this year. coming up, congress says the country cannot afford to wait to address pipeline safety. >> the d.c. council will look to rolling back those high parking fees as drivers complain they can no longer afford a night

a suspected terror plot against european countries has prompted military action by the u.s. it also prompted the cond evacuation of the eiffel tower in as many weeks. a bomb threat was called into the tower today, but police found nothing suspicious. it came on the same day that british intelligence officials said they had intercepted an incredible terror plot against france and britain.

al-qaeda is thought to be connected to the threat which remains unspecified. an official in washington said u.s. strikes in waington have been aimed at disrupting that plot. they say the country must act now to stop pipeline explosions. senators want to meet with inspecrs and say they want to use a manual shut-off valve. this is following a massive explosion that caused a reball. it's stillen clear what caused it. now there's signs that things may be coming ba to normal in nashville, tennessee. the grand ole opry reopened for the first time since the floong. it was an all-starcontest there.

outside right now. there's the jefferson memoal looking good, and actuly a very nice night after a pretty nice day. we saw a couple showers early this morning, but then plenty of sunshine and breezy conditions in the afternoon. high tmperature today, 84 degrees, well above average. about ten degrees above average, so still warm and on theumid side, especially early this mornin but then we did see things dry out a little bit, but rain will be coming back over the next 24 hours 69 degrees right now out there winds from the north-northwest at 20 miles an hour. 50 degrees in frederick, culpepper and winchester, andrews air force base coming in at 68 degrees and annapolis coming in at 71 degrees. that frontal system and storm system that brought all the rain is off to the east. there are sll some showers off of ocean city, marylan here and also down here toward parts of

north carolina. we'll see the kids at 54 to 6 on degre -- 60 degrees tomorrow morning. it's not a very healthy storm, it's a weak storm. not a tropical storm qute yet. it may not even become a tropical storm. it doesn't matter. this has plenty of moisture and all that moisture is going to ride up toward t north with thattorm system which now has winds of 35 miles an hour, but as it makes its way north into florida and into the caronas, it will bring a tremendous amount of moisture with it. watch what happens. instead of going out to the atlantic which most of the time they will do, this one makes a turn back inland and comes over our ea as a remnant low, and that going to provide us with the potential of some very heavy rainfall. so how much rain are we going to get? this is just one estimate. i'm thiing two to four inches of rain in a big swath of area that could see four inches of rain, to the ue ridge here just south of the district. down to north carolina, maybe

four inches pls. i don't think it will happen tomorrow morning, though. partly cloudy, dry to start. we'll start to see the clouds increase, we'll start to see the rain developing, escially late in the day. maybe around rush hour tomorrow afternoon. 70 to 74 degrees for the high temperature. then we'll see the rain develop overnight into the day on thursday. not much rain, but wind gusting to 35 miles an hour. 75 degrees on your tursday and drying out friday into saturday, and right now i think we have a dry weekend, just a cool weekend, as temperatures will only be in the middle 60s. >> something to look forward to after all this rain. >> it will feel a lot like fall and people are happy about that. >> tax day will no longer mean a last-minute trip to the post office for many of
